IPv6’s time has come. For a long time considered a satisfactory but too costly a technical solution to implement, IPv6 is now an issue that cannot be ignored.
The question is no longer if IPv6 is going to find its rightful place but when.
IPv4 exhaustion being a fact, the telecom industry has to provide IPv6 services as soon as possible. However the proposed solutions must allow an easy migration path from the existing installed base to an IPv6 enabled network.
Who are the first service and content providers to offer IPv6 to their customers?
What the main initiatives and field trials regarding new solutions and applications allowed by IPv6?
Which transition mechanisms have to be introduced in the network that could guarantee a long term solution for the coexistence of IPv4 and IPv6 protocols in the network?
What are the requirements for the introduction of the transition mechanism, starting from the initial hypothesis of replication of the current offered services to the possibility to evolve towards new services based only on IPv6?
What are the steps needed for the implementation of the solution in the network and the way to smoothly evolve towards an IPv6 only world?
What are the government policies?
Responses will be given during the V6 World Congress, to be held in Paris February 8 to 11, 2011.
The conference will demonstrate that IPV6 is no more the eternal bridesmaid without a commercial motive. Based on content providers’ testimonies and service providers’ reports, the program will address all technical and standard issues that need to be solved in order to organize the transition from IPv4 to IPv6.
Participants include Free, BT, Deutsche Telekom, Orange, Colt, KPN, Portugal Telecom, Telecom Italia, Telkom Indonesia.
The content providers play a crucial role in IPv6 adoption. Testimonies from Google, Comcast, Softbank and others will demonstrate that, by allowing all devices on a network to talk to each other directly, IPv6 will enable innovation and allow the Internet's continued growth.
A large part of the agenda is dedicated to new solutions in the automotive industry, transport, smart buildings, sensor networks and machine to machine applications.
Governments also play a central role by already imposing the recourse to IPv6. V6 World will welcome representants from the European Commission as well as from different governments or standardization organizations and forums.
